“Upon-the-sea” – Shanghai's translation into English is not without a reason. True to its name, Shanghai is the world's busiest container port located in the Yangtze River Delta and on the banks of the East China Sea, as well as the Huangpu River flowing through the city. With a population of approx. 24 million, Shanghai is one of China’s biggest cities.

  
Since August 2015, the financial district of Shanghai – Pudong – has had a new landmark. The 632 metre high Shanghai Tower is considerably taller than the 492 metre high Shanghai World Financial Center, making  it the tallest building in China. The Maglev Shanghai, the magnetic levitation train continues to be one-of-a-kind, with business people, tourists and locals commuting from Pudong Airport to the city centre and back.

 
Shanghai is the top investment destination in China and a research & development hub for bio , IT and microelectronics technology. Most of foreign direct investments flow into the key sectors of the automotive , chemical  and mechanical engineering industries. In addition, numerous international financial institutions are located in Shanghai. The metropolis alone is home to approx. 1,600 German companies operating in diverse sectors. This number raises to approx. 3,000, when German companies with investments in the three neighbouring provinces of Jiangsu, Anhui and Zhejiang are taken into account.
