Uzbekistan introduces hydrogen energy

Uzbekistan is taking another step towards the widespread introduction and use of renewable energy sources, paving the way for the development of hydrogen energy..

On April 9, 2021, a resolution of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On measures for the development of renewable and hydrogen energy in the Republic of Uzbekistan” was adopted, according to which the National Research Institute of Renewable Energy Sources (hereinafter – the “Institute”) is created.

The Institute is being created under the Ministry of Energy and will also include the Research Center for Hydrogen Energy and the Laboratory for Testing and Certification of Renewable and Hydrogen Energy Technologies.

It should be especially noted that the resolution adopts an integrated approach to the development of hydrogen energy, more precisely:

The resolution contains instructions on the preparation of a draft National Strategy for Development of Renewable and Hydrogen Energy.
The establishment of the Institute and the development of hydrogen energy predetermines the need for personnel training. Therefore, starting from the 2021/2022 academic year, the number of students in the field of hydrogen energy will increase, and from the 2024/2025 academic year, it is planned to launch a master's program in “Hydrogen energy and technology”.
As the main measure for establishing the Institute's activities and personnel training, it is planned to establish relations between the Institute and foreign educational institutions, as well as companies that have achieved success in the fields of renewable and hydrogen energy.
Finally, it is expected to develop proposals for the implementation of pilot projects for the introduction of “green” hydrogen technologies in the economic sector, as well as the provision of incentives/benefits for the creation of experimental testing devices.

Thus, the new document serves as a pivot for the implementation of a number of organizational and legal measures to create conditions for the development of hydrogen and renewable energy, which will open up new opportunities for potential investors in Uzbekistan.
