EU Taxonomy Directive

PrintMailRate-it

As a classification system for “green” investments, the EU taxonomy is an important instrument of the “Sustainable Finance” action plan adopted within the European Green Deal. The aim of the taxonomy is to channel investments into sustainable economic activities and thus make an important contribution to environmental goals such as climate protection and the associated path to climate neutrality by 2050.

In principle, the reporting obligation under the EU taxonomy depends on the CSRD reporting obligation. Companies that fall under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) must therefore generally also report on the EU taxonomy in their sustainability report.

The EU Taxonomy Regulation is designed as a classification system along the lines of corporate economic activities and compliant activities must make a significant contribution to an environmental objective, have no significant negative impact on the other 5 environmental objectives and comply with certain minimum social standards. The individual criteria can be detailed and complex. By complying with the EU taxonomy, a company can gain better access to funding, position itself favourably with customers and underpin its position as a leading and sustainable company in its sector.

CLASSIFICATION ACCORDING TO THE CLIMATE AND ENVIRONMENTAL GOALS OF THE EU

The taxonomy is used to identify “green” activities that are categorised in the six climate and environmental objectives defined by the EU. Companies must disclose the proportion of their turnover, investment and operating costs that come from activities covered by the EU taxonomy and the proportion that are taxonomy-compliant.
